I had the same problem with my X1950pro and the AsRock 4CoreDual-VSTA motherboard. My motherboard has a similar northbridge/southbridge (K8T800 Ultra/VT8237a) as the A8V (K8T800 Pro/VT8237). The symptoms were the same as yours, except the hard drives would power down and the graphics card fan would run at full speed.
I solved the problem by flashing the BIOS to the latest version. Also, i disabled all power saving functions in the BIOS and through Windows "Control Panel --> Power Options".
Make sure your display settings had detected your monitor properly and check that the option for "hide modes that this monitor cannot display" is enabled on the monitor tab.
Make sure your motherboard drivers are up to date. You can get them here (VIA), as ASUS had discontinued the model. ____________ Blue Binary |

Select the download option of your motherboard (vanilla A8V?). There is a BIOS dated June 2007 there. ____________ Blue Binary |

Yes, they will auto install for you when you run it. Try the other solutions i provided as well Thridi.

EDIT: Be VSorry for being a pain but can you give me a bit more in depth information on disabling the power settings in the bios please?
I'm not familiar wuth navigating an A8V bios. Use the cursor keys to find an option for power saving or similar named option, it's there somewhere. ____________ Blue Binary |

Options Are
[Suspend Mode] > [S1(POS) & S3(STR)] or S1(POS) Only Repost Video on S3 Resume on/off ACPT Support Enable/Disable ACPT APIC Support Enable/Disable
[APM Config > Power Management/APM Enable/Disable
Select:
[Suspend Mode] > S1 Only (simple power saving) no S0 function? ACPT? you mean ACPI, no? Leave them enabled, ACPI off will cause Windows to act up. [APM] > DISABLE APM=Advanced Power Management. ____________ Blue Binary |

Probably because your not getting a BSOD.
I take it my suggestions didn't work?
Try the Sapphire Forums. You might get better support there.
Good luck. ____________ Blue Binary |
